Is it actually your pole?
A private power pole is a pole on the customer's side of the network connection point — typically standing somewhere between the street and the house, carrying the overhead consumer mains the last stretch to the property. It's common wherever a house sits well back from the road: long driveways, large blocks, the kind of setup you see repeatedly on the Upper North Shore around Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby Shire.
If the pole is on your property, past the point where Ausgrid's network connection ends, maintaining and replacing it is generally the homeowner's responsibility, not Ausgrid's — even though Ausgrid's equipment (the service line, sometimes a transformer) may be attached to it. This surprises a lot of owners the first time a pole fails or is damaged, because the pole looks and functions exactly like any other Ausgrid pole in the street.
Why this isn't a standard electrical job
Private pole replacement is Level 2 ASP (Accredited Service Provider) work — work on or connected to the electricity network that a standard electrical licence doesn't cover on its own. It requires specific accreditation from Ausgrid, and involves coordinating a supply interruption, working near or on live network infrastructure, and meeting network design standards rather than just the wiring rules that apply inside your home.
Practically, that means: get quotes from a genuine Level 2 ASP, expect a scheduled supply interruption as part of the job, and budget for underlying civil work — excavation, a new footing, reinstating whatever's around the pole base — on top of the pole itself.
Vegetation management: the cheaper preventive option
Before a pole fails outright, the more common problem is a tree limb bearing down on the line running to it or from it.
